# Short links with the URL shortener

Turn a long web address into a short razi.pro link, choose your own name, see how many clicks it gets, and find your links again.

**Shorten a link:** https://www.razi.pro/tools/url-shortener

## Steps

1. Open the URL shortener.
2. Paste the full web address, starting with http:// or https://, into Enter URL to Shorten.
3. Optionally, type a name in Custom Short Name.
4. Click Shorten.
5. Click Copy to copy your new razi.pro link.

## Making a short link

Open the [URL shortener](https://www.razi.pro/tools/url-shortener) and paste a web address into **Enter URL to Shorten**. It has to start with http:// or https://.

Click **Shorten**. Your link appears under **Short URL**, in the form razi.pro/ followed by a code. Click **Copy** to copy it.

If you leave the name blank, you get a random 8-character code. The codes avoid characters that are easy to mix up, such as 0 and O or 1 and l.

## Choosing your own name

Type a name into **Custom Short Name** to get a link like razi.pro/my-link.

- It must be 3 to 32 characters long.
- The box accepts lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. Anything else is removed as you type, and capitals become lowercase.
- Some words are reserved because the site already uses them, such as tools, blog, profile, signin and admin.
- Each name can only be used once.

If you click **Shorten** and no short link appears, the name is probably taken or reserved. Try a different one.

## Seeing your clicks

After you make a link, click **Analytics** next to it. You see:

- **total clicks**: how many times the link has been opened.
- **Clicks by source**: which websites the clicks came from. Clicks with no referring site are counted as **direct**.
- When the link was created.

When you are signed in, the **Analytics** button at the top of the tool shows all your links in a table with **Short URL**, **Original URL**, **Clicks**, **Created** and **Sources**. You can sort by name, clicks or date. Click the sources count on a row to see the breakdown.

## Your links versus public links

Who owns a link depends on whether you were signed in when you made it.

| | Signed in | Not signed in |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who can see it in the list | Only you, under **My URLs** | Everyone, under **Public URLs** |
| Where to find it later | URL shortener, then **Analytics**, then **My URLs** | URL shortener, then **Public URLs** |

When you are signed out, the tool shows a **Public URL Notice** before you shorten anything. Your link and its click counts are visible to anyone.

Your [profile](https://www.razi.pro/profile) shows how many links you have made and their total clicks. The full list lives in the URL shortener itself. [Sign in](https://www.razi.pro/signin) before making a link if you want it in your own list.

## Limits and how long links last

You can make up to 30 short links an hour from one internet connection. If you go over, wait a while and try again.

Short links do not expire. There is no end date on a link once it is made.

Anyone who opens a code that does not exist sees a "Page not found" page.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do razi.pro short links expire?

No. A short link keeps working with no end date once it is made.

### What characters can I use in a custom short name?

Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, between 3 and 32 characters. Capitals are turned into lowercase as you type. Some words the site already uses, such as tools and blog, are reserved.

### Why did nothing happen when I clicked Shorten?

The most common reasons are that your custom name is already taken or reserved, the address does not start with http:// or https://, or you have made more than 30 links in the last hour. Try another name, check the address, or wait and try again.

### Can other people see my short links?

If you made the link while signed out, yes. It appears in the Public URLs list with its click count. Links you make while signed in are listed only under My URLs.

### Where can I find links I made earlier?

Open the URL shortener and click Analytics. If you were signed in, your links are under My URLs. If you were not, look in Public URLs.

### What do the analytics show?

The total number of clicks, which websites the clicks came from, and when the link was created. Clicks from people who typed or pasted the link directly are counted as direct.
